FAQ

General

What is Sunshine?

A free, community-built replacement cloud for the unu Scooter Pro. Tracking, remote control, trip stats, scooter sharing.

Who runs it?

Starsong GmbH (Berlin), with contributions from the community. No connection to unu GmbH or Emco Electroroller GmbH.

Is it free?

Yes. You pay for your own SIM data plan. The scooter uses about 50 MB/month.

Which models work?

unu Scooter Pro (2020+, MDB/DBC architecture). Older models and other brands don't work.

The unu situation

What happened to unu?

unu GmbH went insolvent. Cloud shut down, SIM cards deactivated. Scooters still ride, but everything connected is gone.

Will the unu cloud come back?

No. The company doesn't exist anymore.

Is this legal?

Yes. It's your scooter. Sunshine doesn't use any unu code or IP.

SIM card

Why do I need a new SIM?

The scooter shipped with a soldered MFF2 SIM from unu. It was deactivated when they shut down. No SIM, no internet.

What kind of SIM?

Either a new MFF2 SIM (soldered in directly) or a nano-SIM adapter board. Both require desoldering the old one.

How much data?

About 50 MB/month. Any cheap data plan works. No fixed IP needed.

Can someone do it for me?

Yes. DIY guides, mail-in service, and a Berlin repair shop. See the setup guide.

Getting connected

What is Radio Gaga?

A small service that runs on the stock firmware. Connects the scooter to Sunshine over MQTT. Doesn't replace anything.

Do I need LibreScoot?

No. Radio Gaga on stock firmware is enough for Sunshine. LibreScoot replaces the entire firmware and does a lot more, but it's a bigger project.

Does the stock firmware still work?

Yes. Radio Gaga runs alongside it. Nothing changes about how your scooter rides.

Account

How do I get an invite code?

Ask in the #cloud channel on Discord.

Is my data safe?

Sunshine stores location, battery, and trip data on servers in Germany. Nothing is shared with third parties. You can delete everything at any time.

Can I delete my account?

Yes. Account settings, delete account. Everything goes.

Troubleshooting

Scooter won't connect

Check your SIM has data and signal. Check APN config. SSH in and run 'systemctl status radio-gaga' or 'journalctl -u radio-gaga -n 20'.

Token expired

Generate a new one from the scooter page in Sunshine, then re-run the installer.

Installer fails

You need SSH access and a working internet connection on the scooter. The installer downloads the binary from Sunshine's servers.
